Toddler Tip Tuesday: Stop Throwing Food!

“Toddler Tip Tuesday” is my new weekly series I have started for 2012. I am in no way a toddler expert but since I am going through the joys of toddler hood right now, I will bring you tips that will hopefully make your life a bit easier! This week’s topic is filled with tips to get your toddler to stop throwing food!  You can read my past tips HERE.

Throwing food is completely normal and a very natural developmental stage for toddlers.  But that doesn’t make it any easier to handle! You little one’s experiments with gravity can be messy, funny, and let’s face it-at times very irritating.  Luckily this stage was short lived for my 3 year old but my 14 month old is loving every second of seeing his food go “plop” on the floors, walls, the dog, or anything within a 5 foot radius (yes, he’s got a GOOD arm)!  Here are some techniques that worked with my oldest son and others that I found while searching the net:

This week’s topic is filled with tips to get your toddler to brush their teeth!

Getting your toddler to brush their teeth can be a challenge for many parents.  We have tried many different methods to deal with this battle and I have listed them below (along with some other ones I plan on keeping in my parenting tool belt for future use):

Toddler Tip Tuesday-Don’t Say “No”

“Toddler Tip Tuesday” is my new weekly series I have started for 2012. I am in no way a toddler expert but since I am going through the joys of toddler hood right now, I will bring you tips that will hopefully make your life a bit easier!

While completing my master’s degree in early childhood education, I learned many more positive ways to deal with discipline rather than the “old school” way of just saying, “No!”.  Although that word does come our of my mouth sometimes, I rely on other sayings and tools, and almost always get a better result with the more positive ones. Here are a few of my favorite:

  • When/Then: Instead of telling Will, “No you may not play with your trains at the dinner table”, I say “When you finish eating, then you may play with the trains”.
  • Redirect:  Instead of telling Zack, “No, we don’t throw our food”. We say, “Food is for eating”.
  • Refer to a posted or known rule: We have a handprint chart at our dinner table with proper table manners listed.  Instead of telling Will “No” when he stands on his chair, we simple ask him, “What does the green hand say?”
  • Offer choices:  When Will wants to play ball in the house I offer him 2 other choices instead of saying no such as “Would you like to play puzzles or color a picture?”. He often forgets about his original request!

Toddler Tip Tuesday: How Do I Get My Toddler To Sleep?

“Toddler Tip Tuesday” is my new weekly series I have started for 2012. I am in no way a toddler expert but since I am going through the joys of toddler hood right now, I will bring you tips that will hopefully make your life a bit easier!

This week’s tips are centered around sleep.  Many toddlers begin to figure out ways to “stay up just a little bit longer” and it’s our job as parents to ensure they go to bed and get the needed sleep to help their days run more smoothly.  We all know how much fun a sleep deprived toddler can be!  Here are some things we have found successful  + some other ways I have researched for any future issues.

Toddler Tip Tuesday-Giving Visual Reminders

“Toddler Tip Tuesday” is my new weekly series I have started for 2012. Each week I wil bring you a little tip that will hopefully make your life a bit easier.

Raising a toddler can be quite a journey! Between tantrums, hugs, meltdowns, tears, kisses, laughs, boo boos, and everything else, toddler times are often a roller coaster of emotions.  My 3 year old can be very stong willed at times and I have found that having visual reminders around the house really help when he tries to challenge the rules. They also help to reinforce positive behavior instead of focusing on negative ones.  I utilized many of these when I taught public school full time and have found them just as effective as a parental tool.  Here are some of my favorites-

Toddler Tip Tuesday-How To Get Your Toddler To Eat

Toddler Tip Tuesday” is my new weekly series I have started for 2012.

My oldest son is 3 and he is NOT an “eater”.  He has days where I wonder how he is surviving on what little he consumes!  We have tried all the “trickery” I have can get my hands on, plus all the tried and true techniques handed down from grandparents. Here are a few things that have worked best for me:

  • Serving food with toothpicks-Will LOVES getting samples at the store and eating them with the toothpicks they use to serve the food with.  So, recently if he is giving me a hard time about eating I simply stick a few toothpicks in his food and tell him to try the samples.  He has been gobbling them right up!
  • Unison eating-This doesn’t work so much when I do it, but if Daddy or one of the granparents say “You take a bite of chicken and I will do it at the same time” then he usually goes right along with it.
  • “Shape” it up-I am not a food artist but when I ask Will what shape he wants me to cut his sandwich, if I even come close to his T-Rex, Thomas, or pentagon requests, I can usually get him to eat about half the sandwich!
  • Use “Special” or Adult utensils/plates:  Will loves his special plate that has characters on it.  However that doesn’t always help to motivate him to eat.  Another thing we have tried is giving him an adult fork to use.  He really enjoys eating with a “Mommy and Daddy fork”.

What are your favorite tips to successful eating with a picky toddler?

Stonyfield YoBaby and YoToddler Review and Giveaway

Welcome to the 11th giveaway of the Bringing Home Baby Bash.  Be sure to enter all of the great givewaways HERE
Since Will was old enough to try out solids, he has loved to eat yogurt.  Starting out with Stonyfield’s Yo Baby Yogurt was the number one recommendation from all of the parents we knew.  Boy were they right!  Will gobbled it up faster than any other store bought item we presented to him.  I of course love the fact that it is certified organic, made with whole milk (which supports brain development), and is solid full of other nutrients.
When I contacted Stonyfield to see if they were interested in becoming a sponsor for the Bringing Home Baby Bash, they were eager to participate and sent me a ton of cool “swag”!  Since Will is a toddler, they suggested that I try out their Yo Toddler products and sent me a couple of coupons to score some free Toddler Yogurt.  Wow did Will attack this product!  My husband and I could not believe how fast it disappeared, not to mention the complete loss of manners Will developed during the snack.  Yo Toddler also contains tons of vitamins including the ultra important DHA.
Stoneyfield has also donated a very cool gift pack for one of my readers.  One reader will win a reusable shopping bag and 8 coupons for FREE Stonyfield products that include:
(2) FREE 4-pack of Stonyfield YoBaby Organic Yogurt
(3) FREE 4-pack of Stonyfield YoToddler Organic Yogurt
(3) 4-pack of Stonyfield YoBaby Meals Organic Yogurt
