Homemade Diaper Rash Treatment

diaper rash treat

Ok, we’ve all been there…a nasty diaper rash on our baby. We wonder how it got there and how to make it go away. My son never got one until we started solid foods; specifically apples and tomato sauce (to the horror of my italian husband). I tried everything from Desitin to breast milk (suggested by the doctor; it actually worked a little) but nothing would make the rash go completely away. So I did what many of us do, I hit the internet. While searching I came upon a home remedy chat room and found my cure to diaper rash.

Mix equal parts of vaseline and corn starch to make a paste.

It’s that simple and inexpensive! My son’s diaper rash was gone in 24 hours and now anytime he looks like he may even be getting a slight one, I use the mixture and it’s gone after that diaper change! Not only do I love love love this solution because it works and makes his little bottom all better, it costs next to nothing when compared to popluar products such as Desitin (although I still use Desitin as a preventive). For those of you wondering, this mixture is doctor approved. It is a little messy to make but the benefits far outweigh the mess!

Barbeque Chicken Quesadilla-Easy Recipe!

Barbeque Chicken Quesadilla

Earlier this week I asked readers on my Facebook page if they had any ideas on what to do with a very large amount of leftover slow cooker beer bbq chicken.  All of the ideas sounded delicious but I just had to go with the barbeque chicken quesadilla idea!

Barbeque Chicken Quesadilla

Ingredients:
BBQ Chicken ( see my slow cooker beer bbq chicken recipe)
2 Tortillas
Chedder and Mozzerella Cheese
Lettuce, Sour Cream, Salsa, and other desired toppings

Directions:
1. Heat your skillet over medium heat until it warms.
2. Spray pan with non-stick spray and lay 1 tortilla down.
3.  Cover with a mix of cheese and allow to slightly melt.

4.  Add BBQ chicken and sprinkle more cheese.

5.  Lay other tortilla on top and then flip the whole quesadilla over.  Be sure to not let it “slap” down on the pan, the bbq chicken sauce will splatter!
6. Continue cooking and flipping until it reaches your desired color brown.

Fall Fitness Week 4: Declutter

Welcome to my new series: Fall Fitness!  If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, check them out here!

If you pay close attention to my Facebook page, you know I enjoy running as my main form of exercise. Unfortunately I hurt my back a few weeks ago and have been unable to do very much physical activity-which has driven both my body and mind NUTS! Also, it’s made me a bit lazy on menu planning since it’s been difficult to move from my heating pad! Sadly, this has led to way too many take out meals. I am pretty much 95% healed so it is time to get back into shape-both physically and financially! I will be writing this series “Fall Fitness” to hold myself accountable and to hopefully gain some team mates in the process (that would be you)! I will share my goals, menu, and tip each week that will hopefully keep us fit thru the fall!

Update from Last Week’s Goals:

Fitness:  I was able to meet both goals last week.  I completed Jillian Michael’s Ripped in 30 5 times (which is 1 more than my goal) and I was able to run 4 times.  However, on my “long run” day, I upped the miles and my back paid the price.  I was in a lot of pain and am going to have to go visit the therapist again; so unfortunately, I will be taking the week off from running.  I am continuing taking measurements and weighing myself-this week I only lost 1 1/2 inches but I did lose 1 pound…not much but it’s still a loss!

Fitness Goals Week 4:

  • Complete Jillian Michaels’s Ripped in 30 5 times
  • Go walking at least 2 miles 4 times (This is to replace the running. Since I have 3 races coming up, I need to be doing something).
  • Cut back on soda.  I know, soda is HORRIBLE for you, but I don’t drink coffee and generally allow myself 1 soda a day…but with the baby cutting teeth I’ve been indulging in more to pep myself up from lack of sleep.  I will only have 1 a day this week and then starting weaning myself from that one down to none (eventually).

Menu Plan Week 4:

  • Monday:  Mexican Monday-We grilled chicken and pork over the weekend so we’ll be using the leftovers to make soft tacos.
  • Tuesday:  Zucchini lasagna-I have a recipe I am playing around with and making some changes so I will post the results.
  • Wedneday:  Baked chicken with brown rice and broccoli
  • Thursday:  Grilled Cheese and tomato soup (soccer practice so needs to be easy)
  • Friday:  Whole wheat pizza using a store bought crust and adding lots of veggies.
  • Saturday:  Husband’s choice
  • Sunday:  Turkey Chili

Tip of the Week:

Clean out the clutter!  Not only will this help you feel better about your home, but you may be able to find some items to sell.  You can also donate items and receive a tax deduction-that’s a win win!

How To Make A Diaper Cake

I’m attending a baby shower this weekend and volunteered to make the diaper cake.  I’ve only ever made 2 in my life so I am not sure what possessed me to do this (I’m blaming Pinterest) but I actually think this one turned out great!  I am super excited to see the reactions from the parents to be.

Although it looks complicated, this cake was very easy to make. The longest part of the process was deciding on what I wanted to include in the decorations!

Here are the steps that I took to make this cake:

1.  The base of this cake is a big box of wipes.  I simply took a box and wrapped it with one of the blankets from the couple’s registry.

2.  Next I started rolling up diapers and securing them with individual rubberbands. This part is time consuming so I advise doing it in front of the TV or soliciting help.

3.  Wrap a big refill bag of wipes with a rubberband. Then insert each rolled diaper in the rubberband until you’ve surrounded the wipes.  I did two layers like this.

4. Next I rolled 2 of the blankets from the registry and secured them with a rubberband.  Then I laid them on top of the wipes as the bassinet “wheels”.

5.  Next came the bassinet.  First I wrapped the wipes refill bag with another blanket. Then I wrapped a rubberband around it and inserted rolled diapers all around.  Then I cut a thin layer of cardboard and curved it to create the bassinet opening.  Finally I took another blanket and wrapped it around the entire bassinet and tucked the edges into the rolled diapers.  The picture below has the ballet shoes inside the bassinet because I was still deciding what I liked best. :)

6.  Finally I added the ribbon, bows, and other decor.  The bear and letter A are secured by the hair bows and I used Scotch tape to adhere the ballet slippers.

Dating On A Dime

I love this week’s post from Madame Deals and Living on Love and Cent’s Dating on a Dime.  My husband and I actually just did this same kind of date for Valentine’s Day.  With no family close by to babysit and a limited budget, you do what you have to do!

Is the Art of dating gone? Do we live in a world where it is okay to text someone to ask them out? The answer is “yes” for some girls. I am still the kind of lady that requires a phone call. I have had a rule that many have failed to follow and that is adore me or be gone. I have to say my husband still follows that same rule that won my heart almost 14 years ago.

It is important to love the one you are with and adore them everyday. It is often difficult in our case with three children, work, travel for work, running a business or two, three children (I know I said that twice but boy oh boy are kids a lot of work), and managing a house. I have to say we often do not set up “dates” often enough. I am encouraged to get ourselves organized now that I have some ideas on childcare options.

This week my husband called me while he was on travel to ask me out. I started laughing at first then I realized he was serious, so after feeling like a goof ball, I accepted. He asked me to go to the movies at home. He is going to pick out something I will like from the library since it is free and then he will make me snacks and dinner. I did suggest the Blockbuster kiosk is $1.

This is very sweet and the reason behind the movie at home date besides saving money is my husband has a difficult time staying awake at the theater and I usually get really upset when he falls asleep during the movie. He asked me why I am so surprised since on our first date he fell asleep during SCREAM. I’m sure didn’t marry him for his ability to stay awake during movies.

He apparently didn’t marry me for being the shy type, so we’re even. The point is to make an effort with the person you love. That means call them and invite them out even if “out” is dinner and a movie at home. I mean there is a really good chance they will say “yes” so at least the pressure is off.

Frugal Uses For Lingerie Bags

This is a great post from Mama Loves Her Bargains!  I love finding new uses for household items!

I was thinking earlier today as I put our tub toys into one of my lingerie bags, how much I use these, and almost never for actual lingerie. I use lingerie bags so often that sometimes I think I should look into buying stock.
Why?
Well, my journey into using lingerie bags started in late June of 2005, and we’d just moved into our home where we are now. We’d carefully set aside some of the monies from the sale of our previous home to buy a front loading washer/dryer set, and it was finally delivery day. Two very burly, manly men came to deliver the set, and while one was filling out paperwork , the other kindly said to me, eyeing my belly that was sticking out about 2 feet from my body, “Do you use lingerie bags frequently?”
I blushed, about eleventy-billion shades of red. Um, excuse me? Say wha, stranger man?

He kind of chuckled, and said to me, his wife realized soon after their first baby was born, that lingerie bags keep teeny tiny baby socks from getting lost…and the little mittens so they don’t scratch their faces.
What a GREAT idea, I thought, and being the good girl on modified bed rest that I was, headed to Target instead of to the couch. I HAD to have lingerie bags before the baby came. I didn’t want to lose a tiny sock, not me!!
I came home with three kinds. Please don’t tell my husband. He doesn’t know how many I bought that first day.
They ARE great for baby sock washing. They are also great for baby and little girl tights, so they don’t wrap around other laundry.
But you can also use them for tub toy storage, which means they all dry quickly and kids can see where their favorite tub toys are. When its time to wash the tub toys, you just zip the bag closed, and none get lost. I wash my tub toys in the dishwasher in the top rack.
I also wash those little toy links for baby/toddler toys in lingerie bags.
My favorite thing to use lingerie bags for is legos. Let’s face it, kids are germy. The top rack of my dishwasher has seen legos many, many times!! None fall out or get loose in the dishwasher with a lingerie bag.
I also use lingerie bags for beach toys. Sand usually falls out through the holes as we walk back to our car, decreasing the amount of sand that we bring home. The bags keep everything all together so when its time to go to the beach, we just grab the bag and go, instead of scrambling around looking for toys.
Of course, lingerie is occasionally washed in lingerie bags.

Have you found other uses for products like I have?  Share them!  I love discovering helpful tips!!
